Mammoth Here We Come

July 4, 2009

Have a few coming up from SoCal, and a few friends from NCal meeting in Mammoth for 4 days of fun. Looks like there is still snow on the upper half of the mountain, but Mammoth is hoping to have at least a few trails from the top, and most from mid mountain open.

Tour of California – 2009

February 22, 2009

Saturday, February 21, 2009 three of us headed out to catch stage 7 of the Tour of California.  This stage would bring riders into Pasadena.  They’d have to cross the mountains between the high desert and the city to do it.  We planned to watch them about two-thirds of the way on a small climb just past Big Tujunga Canyon on Angeles Forest Highway.  When we arrived, about 3 hours before the first riders, we had the place to ourselves.  Soon more spectators arrived, but it never got too crazy.  And, besides one CHP motor officer, everyone was well behaved.

You need to get over and check out Robb’s site, Mountain Biking 198.  I really love what he is doing over there.  Great reviews and industry news.  He’s also starting to post up some in-depth trail reviews.  He’s got a few ads on his site, but only for good stuff, so don’t hesitate to visit his sponsors.

Oil and Gas Drilling Stopped in Utah

February 5, 2009

Associated Press Writer Paul Foy, Associated Press Writer – Wed Feb 4, 2009

SALT LAKE CITY – In a high-profile reversal of the Bush administration, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Wednesday the government is scrapping the lease of 77 parcels of federal land for oil and gas drilling in Utah’s redrock country.

“In the last weeks in office, the Bush administration rushed ahead to sell oil and gas leases near some of our nation’s most precious landscapes in Utah,” Salazar said from Washington in a teleconference call with reporters.

At first, the BLM was going to auction a parcel so close to Delicate Arch, the signature landmark at Arches park near Moab, drills might have been visible through the center of the 33-foot-wide span. That parcel was 1.3 miles away. It was taken off the auction list under Park Service protest, but the BLM took bids on other drilling parcels within view of Arches, Canyonlands and Dinosaur parks.

Well, there’ll soon be a new machine in the stable. Lori is getting a Knolly Endorphin! White frame, RP23, Chris King, XTR, Hope, TALAS 15mm, Thomson, and more. Should have all the parts early in Jan 09 for the build.

Update:  90% of the build should arrive 1/14/08, with the last couple of bits arriving hopfully the following week.  The big hold up is the 15mm axle for the CK front hub.  Let the building begin!

1.21.09 – The build is complete.  Check out the build list and photos on the Hardware page.

SoCal Wildfires – Nov ‘08

November 19, 2008
Isn’t is supposed to be winter?  You know, calling off rides because of the rain or mud.  Well, not this past weekend, 11/15/08.  Fires to the north and east, combined with the Santa Ana winds, made for smoky conditions in the western half of Los Angeles.  Managed a short ride on Saturday, but Sunday the smoked called off a bigger ride.  Many hundreds of homes were lost, but thankfully no lives that we know of.  Oh, and did I mention the 90 degree temps?  It does look like things will be much better this coming weekend.
